Real-time feedback control microscopy, Pertz Lab, Bern, Switzerland

May 5, 2026

System description & applications

This system supports advanced imaging modalities including TIRF acquisition, FRAP experiments, and multiposition imaging of cells.

It also enables feedback microscopy through API access, allowing real-time interaction with the acquisition process. Using Python-based analysis, imaging parameters can be automatically adjusted based on live data, enabling adaptive and automated experimental workflows.

The high-throughput assays enabled by this system are a powerful tool to study how local signaling events shape cellular behavior, from subcellular dynamics and single-cell migration up to emergent tissue-level processes.

To learn more about the experimental setup and methodology, see the preprint Real-time feedback control microscopy for automation of optogenetic targeting (Hinderling et al., 2026), which provides a detailed technical discussion and demonstrates applications across different pathways and biological scales.
